Meet Your Kanga Host

At Alagollewa Homestay, you will stay with one of our three host families, all relatives and close friends. Evenings are shared naturally, one night here, the next there. People drop by, sit together and spend their free time among the different homes. That is how community works here.

Our Local Coordinator, Hiruni, allocates guests and keeps everything connected. With her countless brothers, sisters, uncles and aunties, you will most likely lose track by day two. Expect many children around. They are sweeter than tea in Sri Lanka, while the cats and dogs are just as shy as the children on the first day.

Your Accommodation

Each homestay has one or two rooms and they are close to each other, so guest groups can share all activities and spend all their time together.

Learn how to prepare String Hoppers at one place, get a fresh mango from the garden at the next. We promise you will never have an empty stomach here.

Some of the hosts and villagers are farmers, cultivating rice, beans, corn, and sometimes chilli or watermelon. You can visit their paddy fields or learn how to milk a cow and enjoy the fresh milk straight away.

A Connection That Gets Under Your Skin

…and there is still so much more to discover together.

Almost every evening, the boys of the Saint Anthony’s cricket club train for their league matches, and you are welcome to join them and hit a ball as well. If you prefer something calmer, how about a swim in the nearby lake, or a trip to Hurulu Wewa Tank, including a visit to the Hurulu Dewalaya temple?

You can also get a fresh haircut at a local barber’s shop, or even get a tattoo, because in Alagollewa, the connections you build truly go under your skin, literally.
