Welcome to Kalimaji Homestay – A Hidden Gem Near Arusha
A short distance from Arusha, yet untouched by mainstream tourism, Kalimaji Homestay offers a rare glimpse into daily life within a modern Maasai family. The neighbourhood combines rich traditions with contemporary Tanzanian culture. With its peaceful surroundings, it’s the perfect gateway to explore local life beyond the usual tourist trails.
Your host, Neema, a creative young woman, loves sharing her skills and if you’re curious, she’ll happily introduce you to traditional tailoring, using a foot-operated sewing machine – no electricity needed!
Evenings at Kalimaji Homestay are filled with conversations and music. Friends and family often gather for dinner and before you know it, Neema’s children will be teaching you Swahili songs. Singing along at the table, you’ll be fully embraced by Tanzanian hospitality.
Your private room is a cosy retreat, featuring a comfortable bed with warm blankets for a restful night’s sleep. The house is surrounded by colourful flowers and lush plants, creating a peaceful oasis after a day of new experiences.
The place includes a kitchen hut, where meals, chai or hot water for showers are prepared over an open fire. A separate building on the property serves as a gathering space for community events and women’s support groups, where local women come together to uplift and empower each other.
A delicious way to experience Tanzanian culture is through its food! Join a hands-on Mandazi Workshop at a neighbourhood bakery, where you’ll learn to make these soft, lightly sweetened Swahili doughnuts. Mix, shape and fry your own batch while soaking in the local bakery’s atmosphere. Whether enjoyed warm or packed as a snack for later, Mandazi is a true Tanzanian delight!

Kanga Homestay gave me the opportunity to discover some truly amazing places in Tanzania. I visited a Maasai community in Lengijave and gained a much deeper insight into their culture than I ever imagined possible. My journey continued to Nijiro/Kalimaji, near Arusha, where I was introduced to traditional handcrafts and the country’s rich knowledge of herbal medicine. Monica, Yussuph and Lea were wonderful companions throughout my stay. I’m grateful for the memories and the friendship!
I stayed 3 nights at Kalimaji Homestay and gained incredible insights into local life. There’s so much to experience during your stay. The highlight for me was a herbal medicine tour, where Mama Lea shared her deep knowledge about the effects and uses of various healing plants. Yusuph was there as a translator, which made it easy to follow and truly understand everything she explained.
Since I signed up for something similar in Botsuana last year, I wanted to try it out in Tanzania as well. And this was even better! What I experienced with Kanga Homestay was truly outstanding, authenticity on the next level, and 100% real.
The Village Stay at Kalimaji, in a suburban setting, was truly fulfilling. I would like to thank the host family and their friends, Regional Manager Monica, Local Coordinator Yusuph, and last but not least, of course, Kanga Homestay for organizing everything.
