Welcome to Kigamboni Homestay – A Community of Creativity and Movement

Kigamboni is a unique coastal area just a short ferry ride from the city center of Dar es Salaam. With sandy paths, the scent of fresh chapati in the air and children’s laughter echoing through the neighbourhood, this urban village forms a close-knit community, where local traditions, skilled craftsmanship and strong bonds shape daily life.

Meet Your Kanga HostAt Kigamboni Homestay, you’ll stay with one of several welcoming families living next to each other. Our Local Coordinator, Rashid, will match you with the perfect host based on your interests. Free to enjoy activities from all the Homestays, you’ll feel like part of a big extended family.

Aisha’s Family invites you into their multigenerational home, where you can weave traditional carpets with the grandmother or explore the village with her gorgeous children. Beatrice shares hospitality and introduces you to the rich flavours of Swahili cuisine, while Mama Tatu, known as “Mama Chapati”, will teach you to make chapati and let you try your hand at tailoring with a traditional foot-operated sewing machine.

Your AccommodationEach Homestay has its own unique charm, with traditional Tanzanian style, shaded outdoor areas and private rooms for a comfortable retreat. With up to four guest rooms available, Kigamboni Homestay is perfect for solo travellers, couples or even groups of up to eight people. Since all families live close by, you stay connected while enjoying your own space.

Kigamboni Community CenterA highlight of your stay is a visit at Kigamboni Community Center (KCC), a dynamic space where young people come together daily to practice acrobatics, dance and music. This vibrant hub of talent and passion is a true reflection of the area’s strong community – a place where residents and volunteers support and inspire one another. The energy is infectious and you’ll quickly understand how this space brings people together, fostering creativity, discipline and joy.  As a guest, you’ll have the chance to witness great performances, enjoy a showcase of KCC Bandi – the center’s music group – or even take part in a session yourself.
