Through a happy coincidence I ended up staying with Mama Aishas family in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar. Aisha is a lovely host, and the kids as well were the best. We always had a good laugh even though we did not speak the same language. Besides the daily chores in and around the house I got to learn a lot about Swahili cooking from Aisha, the kids took me out to explore the village and showed me their favorite spots to swim and play.

It was a wonderful experience that really deepened my perspective on Zanzibari culture and the way of life, and i will definitely do it again if I return to Zanzibar / Tanzania in the future.

The stay with Aisha and her family in Kizimkazi really grounded me, and it humbled me. It is a whole different feeling when you do a neighborhood and village tour with a local than when you just stroll around by yourself. They seem to know everyone, they know every rock.

Because I really wanted to pick up some Swahili cooking skills and recipes, we prepared a lot of local meals together: fish curry, wali wa nazi (rice with coconut cream), chapati, sukuma wiki (collard greens), and pilau.

She was never tired of showing me something new! Thank you 🙂
