Meet Your Kanga HostsYou will feel like part of a close-knit rural community, not just as a guest of a specific family. During the village tour upon arrival, expect to meet the friendliest and most welcoming villagers, who take pride in hosting guests and allowing them to engage in their daily life. Many families bear the last names Kivuyo or Lukumay, which are typical Maasai surnames in the Arusha region.

For guest stays, the Regional Manager will take care of family placements and room assignments according to the guest’s preferences. If you’re staying for several nights, it may even be possible to switch families and gain insights from various hosts. Speaking of Kanga’s Regional Manager, Doreen: She grew up in the village and knows it inside out, like the back of her hand, effortlessly coordinating everything.

Your AccommodationWhile some locals in Likamba live in typical, contemporary Maasai houses, others reside in traditional bomas, which serve as a communal space for social interaction and cultural expression. In the homes of local host families, rooms are available for both couples and solo travellers, providing a comfortable and immersive stay. Relax in the cozy living rooms, where you can share stories and feel the warmth of this charming village.

Genuine Maasai ExperiencesFetch water with a donkey, collect firewood, and prepare meals in traditional Maasai kitchens. Learn how to milk cows and goats and take cattle to pasture – a part of life in Likamba where you can connect with the animals and nature. The iconic Ankole-Watusi cows, with their impressive horns, are a staple in the area and are often seen grazing in the fields.

As the sunset approaches, a short climb up the local hill reveals a breathtaking view of Mount Meru, accompanied by a mesmerizing and enchanting atmosphere.

Once we hosted a group of six Japanese guests in Likamba. Only one spoke English, yet we connected through gestures. Cultural differences became a truly enriching experience.

When the hosts prepared roast maize for the guests, to their surprise, the guests took the maize and put margarine on it. The hosts had never seen roast maize eaten with melted margarine before, but now they do it as well.

My stay in Likamba couldn’t have been better. It was amazing to be with all the visiting families. We shared many precious moments together.

The first day, we milked goats and cows with big horns. The day after, we learned Maasai beading, among other things, and then enjoyed a special dinner at a boma before retiring for the night.

Within walking distance is a viewpoint with a view of Mount Meru, an amazing sight as long as the mountain isn’t hidden by clouds. There is also a cool bar in the area, which, I was told, was a new project.

All that being said, what I liked best was just being able to experience village life. I would have loved to stay much longer!

I totally loved being in Likamba.

When you think about everything that is included, accommodation, meals, and even the included activities, Kanga Homestay truly offers amazing value for money.

On top of that, with the package you also get access to very affordable excluded activities, and in Likamba those really are local prices.

And the best part is that at the same time you are doing something good for the community and supporting it directly.
